As Amtrak looks ahead with a new 30-year plan for high-speed rail, and as the Maryland Transit Administration goes back to square one in its quest for someone to take over operations of MARC’s Camden and Brunswick lines from CSX, it’s clear that trains in America aren’t what they used to be. That’s one lesson that James McCommons learned early on in 2008 when he was researching his book Waiting on a Train: The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail Service: A Year Spent Riding Across America.
We ask McCommons what else he’d learned.
